QURAN
\r\n
\r\n

Translation:

\r\n
\r\n
\"Behold, \r\n the Hypocrites (Munafiqeen) seek to deceive \r\n Allah, but it is they who are being deluded by Him. \r\n When they rise to Prayer, they rise reluctantly, and \r\n only to be seen by other persons. But little do they \r\n hold Allah in Remembrance. They dangle between \r\n the one and the other (between faith and disbelief), \r\n and belong to neither completely. And he whom Allah \r\n lets go astray, for him you can find no way.\"

Tafseer:
\r\n

\r\n
Background
\r\n
In \r\n the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him) a person could not \r\n be identified as a member of the Islamic community, \r\n unless he prayed regularly. We know that even \r\n the secular associations today consider the absence of \r\n any member from their meetings, without a valid excuse, \r\n as a sign of lack of interest, and if the member persists \r\n in it, his membership may even be cancelled.
\r\n

\r\n
Even \r\n the Hypocrites attended the Congregation of Prayer \r\n
\r\n
Similarly, \r\n in those days, a person's absence from congregational \r\n Prayers in the mosque was considered a clear indication \r\n of his indifference towards Islam. Therefore, even \r\n the worst of hypocrites had to attend the Five daily Prayers \r\n in the mosque.
\r\n

\r\n
Reluctance of \r\n Hypocrites vs. Remembrance of Believers
\r\n
    \r\n
  • \r\n
In these \r\n verses the methods and motives of the hypocrites are \r\n thoroughly unmasked. What distinguished a \r\n true believer from the hypocrite was that the former \r\n came to the mosque with devotion, fervor, and \r\n his heart in the Remembrance of Allah, came there \r\n well before the appointed time for the Prayer, and \r\n did not rush out of the mosque as soon as the Prayer \r\n was over.
    \r\n
  • \r\n
Whereas \r\n the call to the Prayer for the hypocrite seemed like \r\n the announcement of an unavoidable calamity. When \r\n such a person set off for the mosque, he walked \r\n as if he were dragging the entire weight of his being. \r\n No wonder, that, as soon as the Prayer was over, he \r\n escaped like a prisoner released from jail. His \r\n entire demeanour testified that the Remembrance of \r\n God was not what he really had his heart in.

\r\n
Believers Today:
\r\n
We \r\n should examine our practice of Islam and the condition \r\n of our hearts. Today, our hearts, talks, and thoughts \r\n lean often more towards the glitters of a mall, rather \r\n than the Paryers in a masjid. Our attitudes may change \r\n if we begin to view the Salah (prayers) the way \r\n the first community of Believers saw it. As long as our \r\n hearts and actions remain 'two-faced', \r\n we may not be able to realize the role that the \r\n Prayers and mosques play in transforming individuals and \r\n communities.

\"What \r\n should I do then?\"

\r\n

\"You (Muslims) will one day be ruled by men who will kill \r\n the Sunnah (Prophetic traditions), violate \r\n the orders of Islam, and delay the time of Prayer,\" \r\n said the Prophet (peace be upon him) once.

\r\n

A \r\n man named Ibn Masud asked, \"What should I do then?\"

\r\n

\"Don't \r\n you know what to do? Whoever disobeys Allah must not \r\n be obeyed,\" the Prophet answered.

DAWA - Time to Come Out \r\n of our Boxes!
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n

After \r\n realizing the need to accept the responsibility \r\n of doing Dawa on individual and collective level, \r\n the following few concepts and tips may be useful \r\n for Dawa in future:

\r\n

Dawa \r\n is not just about handing out pamphlets on streets \r\n or in prisons. It is about sharing and living Islam \r\n through our behavior and preaching. Therefore, \r\n if we do something immoral or indecent in public, \r\n obviously it will harm our Dawa efforts. Immodest \r\n clothing, usage of foul language, or interacting \r\n with the people of opposite gender beyond the limits \r\n set by Islam, will project a negative image to non-Muslims... \r\n [To \r\n be continued in the next issue]

Modesty \r\n [Haya] in Islam and Manners of Dressing
\r\n
\r\n

*DRESS: \r\n Symbol of the Civilizing Power of Islam*

\r\n

Our Dress serves three functions:

\r\n
    \r\n
  • \r\n
    to \r\n protect the body from the weather, from \r\n heat and cold, wind and rain;
    \r\n
  • \r\n
    to \r\n adorn and beautify the human personality;
    \r\n
  • \r\n
to \r\n help to safeguard the modesty and decency of a person \r\n and safeguard the moral ideals of a society. Dress \r\n therefore has a moral function.
    \r\n
  • \r\n
\r\n
Appropriate dress both for men and women is naturally important \r\n for a society where sexual relations is confined to \r\n marriage. To make it easy for people to live within the \r\n bounds of morality, they are required to wear clothes \r\n that conceal and not reveal or accentuate their bodily \r\n charms and thus reduce or eliminate temptations.
\r\n

\r\n
Islam, being a universal religion, has not prescribed \r\n a particular form, fashion, or style of dress. However, \r\n it sets certain requirements of dress whatever the climate \r\n or region. These requirements apply to both \r\n men and women:
\r\n
    \r\n
  1. \r\n
    Dress \r\n should cover a person's 'AWRAH:
    \r\n
      \r\n
    • \r\n
      A \r\n man's 'Awrah extends from the navel \r\n to the knee;
      \r\n
    • \r\n
A \r\n woman's 'Awrah is the whole body with \r\n the exception of face, hands, and feet.
      \r\n
    • \r\n
    \r\n
  2. \r\n
Dress \r\n should not be transparent.
    \r\n
  3. \r\n
    Dress \r\n should be loose-fitting.
    \r\n
  4. \r\n
Dress \r\n outside the home should not be worn for the sake \r\n of showiness, whether it is glamorous garments \r\n that make for pride or excite admiration and lust \r\n among the members of opposite genders, or promote \r\n envy among the same gendered people.
    \r\n
  5. \r\n
On \r\n the other hand, our garments should not be torn \r\n and rough either, worn in order to draw \r\n attention to poverty or alleged piety.
    \r\n
  6. \r\n
Men \r\n are not allowed to wear silk or gold and women should \r\n not wear perfume outside the home.
    \r\n
  7. \r\n
\r\n
Proper dress is one of the outer symbols of the civilizing \r\n mission and power of Islam.

\r\n

Note \r\n for example the following verse: John 16:13 \r\n \"When the Spirit of Truth comes, he will guide you \r\n into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own \r\n authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and \r\n he will declare to you the things that are to come,\" \r\n which is quite an accurate description of the purpose \r\n and mission of the Last Prophet!

\r\n

This \r\n week's Question: Muslims date their calendars \r\n from the Hijrah, the historic event in the life of \r\n Prophet Muhammad (saw) and his followers that is of \r\n paramount importance to Muslims of all times because \r\n of what it signifies and represents.
